‘Our heart is in restoration.’ Old Perithia | Corfu - established c. 1357 and returning to life since 2010...
Over the past few years, Mark & Saskia have worked with empathy and insight to continue their goal of bringing the old village back to life. It has evolved from 15% restored, or in process, to over 33% as at the end of 2017, presenting 20% growth over the past 8 years.
The signage, including the ‘Welcome’ sign, maps, village sign and no through road signs to keep cars away from the village are now greatly improved. Litter is collected regularly around the entire village and on the road down as far as the small bridge at Loutses, and bins readily available around the key visitor areas. The rubbish bins are now hidden behind a wooden fence away from the church of St James the Persian that has recently been restored. The paths are often trimmed and cleared, enabling visitors to now walk around the entire village, approximately 1 mile on a circular tour.
There are now 5 tavernas (from 4 previously) and a number of houses have been restored, maintained, or renovated, as well as 5 of the (8) churches. The street lamps are replaced by us, with warm lights to lessen the impact on the night skies and various pieces of land maintained and cleared to ‘open up’ the village and reveal some of the terraces that have been hidden over the past 40 or so years.
Much of the above has been achieved with the kind help and support of the archaeological department and Mark & Saskia have worked closely with them to ensure each restoration they have done, or project managed, is completely in keeping with the look and methods as they were, circa. 1650, when many of the properties were last renovated, extended or improved. Today the village is 90-95% as it had been all those many years ago.
Our first restoration was The Merchant’s House(s), originally three separate houses, now a Boutique B&B with 6 suites (pictured above.) We have also been instrumental in the restoration and repair of other key properties in the village, including 'The Cuckoo's Nest' also pictured above. With the two finest restorations under their belts, Mark & Saskia have gained the greatest expertise in restoration of old properties in the village. We work in harmony with the finest architects, engineers, local builders , each skilled in the renovation of properties of Venetian influence, and in accordance with the strict guidelines of the archaeological department of Corfu and the Ionian islands. Our depth of knowledge is invaluable for anyone considering a purchase, and subsequent restoration in Old Perithia.
